Bowling rules & regulations: Kyle Troup's guide to the basics
Bowling is one of those timeless activities that blends fun with a touch of friendly competition. Whether you're a seasoned bowler or a complete newbie, it’s always helpful to have a grasp of the basic bowling rules and regulations. Understanding the ins and outs of the game will not only improve your skills but also ensure everyone at your lane is having a good time.
As PBA Champion Kyle Troup puts it, “These rules are in place to ensure fair play and fun competition, so let's lace up and get started!”
This guide covers everything from scoring to etiquette so your next visit to Lucky Strike is seamless.
The basic bowling rules
Let’s kick things off by covering the most important rules to help you get started.
1. Frames and turns
Each game of bowling is divided into 10 frames. In each frame, players get two chances to knock down all 10 pins.
Knock them all down on the first roll? That’s a strike.
Knock down the remaining pins on the second roll? That’s a spare.
The goal is simple: knock down as many pins as possible.
2. Scoring
Bowling scoring can seem tricky at first, but it becomes second nature quickly.
Strike:
10 points + your next two rolls
Spare:
10 points + your next roll
Open frame:
Total pins knocked down in two rolls
In the 10th frame, strikes and spares earn bonus rolls, making a perfect game of 300 possible.
3. Foul line
The foul line separates the approach from the lane. If you step over it during your throw, it’s a foul, and the roll counts as zero.
4. Legal pinfall
Pins must be knocked down by the ball or another pin to count. Anything else (like lane equipment) doesn’t count toward your score.
5. Ball return area
The ball return is shared space—keep it clear of drinks, food, and personal items to avoid damage or accidents.
Bowling etiquette: playing with courtesy
Bowling isn’t just about skill; it’s about the experience. A few simple etiquette rules go a long way.
1. Stay in your lane
Only one person should be on the approach at a time. Be aware of bowlers on adjacent lanes and take turns.
2. Respect the pace of play
Be ready when it’s your turn. No need to rush, but avoid slowing the game down.
3. Keep it clean
Avoid throwing the ball too hard or lofting it. Treat the lanes and equipment with care.
4. Limit distractions
Keep noise and movement to a minimum when others are bowling. Cheer, have fun, but be mindful.
Troup says, "Make sure to keep in mind your fellow competitors. Wait for your competitors on either side of you, and try to keep distractions to a minimum."
Handy tips for a smooth bowling experience
1. Pick the right ball
Choose a ball that feels comfortable: not too heavy, not too light (around 10% of your body weight is a good guideline).
"If the ball feels right in your hand, you’re already setting yourself up for success,” says Troup.
2. Stay focused
Use the arrows on the lane as your target, not the pins themselves.
3. Keep your approach consistent
Smooth, repeatable steps lead to better accuracy and control.
4. Adjust to the lane
Oil patterns can affect how your ball moves. If something feels off, adjust your position slightly.
5. Have fun
At the end of the day, bowling is about enjoying the moment.
Something to note is if you're bowling in a tournament or league, they can have their own rules as well. "Keep in mind that these are just your basic rules of bowling, so be make to check for any tournament or league rules, to see sure they special or specific rules related to the game," Troup adds.
"By understanding and adhering to the rules and regulations of bowling, that is going to ensure fair play and fun competition for all. So the next time you go on the lanes, make sure to follow the rules and have some fun!"
